Two TRC Commissioners Off to Nigeria
Commissioner Pearl Brown Bull and Gerald Coleman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Liberia left the country yesterday for training on techniques of combating money laundering and other financial crimes at the West Africa Institute for Financial and Economic Management in Lagos, Nigeria.
In furtherance to Article IV section 4 of the TRC Act of June 22, 2005, which gives the power to commission crimes such as the exploitation of natural resources by perpetrators of armed conflict before 14 October 2003, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Liberia has established an Economic Crime Committee for which Commissioner Gerald Coleman and Cllr. Bull are members. Whilst in Nigeria, Commissioner Pearl Brown Bull and a member of the TRC Outreach Diaspora Committee on Nigeria will visit two Liberian refugee settlement camps in Ggren and Lagos.
The TRC of Liberia is the first TRC around the world to extend statement taking to nationals out of the country of its establishment. Statement taking in the United States of America has begun under the joint effort of the Minnesota Advocates for Human rights Group and the TRC of Liberia with Commissioner Massa Washington as the TRC Representative.
Cllr. Bull and Sheik Kafumba Konneh have oversight responsibility for the TRC process in Nigeria.
