U.N.S.G. Deputy Special Representative Visits the TRC

November 21, 2007

MONROVIA (TRC)?The United NationsSecretary-General's Deputy Special Representative to Liberia, Her Excellency Henrietta J. A. N. Mensa-Bonsu on Wednesday paid visit to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in Monrovia to determine what progress had been made by the Commission thus far.

During the visit, the Deputy Special Representative said the work of the TRC is critical to the reconstruction process of the country as it endeavors to restore the lost dignity of Liberians.

She told the Commission that the attainment of peace and reconciliation in Liberia is an enormous challenge for the TRC, which calls for courage and commitment, adding, "the wounds can never be built on falsehood."

The DSR disclosed that the work of TRCs all over the world is frustrating, unhappy and unpleasant but urged the TRC of Liberia to remain focused and unwavering, as it is only posterity that would judge its work.

The Deputy Special Representative, who once served as a member on the International Technical Advisory Committee (ITAC) of the TRC in Liberia, said she was happy to be back in Liberia, particularly at the TRC to help bring genuine peace, security and reconciliation to the country.

Welcoming the U. N. Secretary-General's Deputy Special Representative to the TRC, the Chairman of the Commission, Cllr. Jerome Verdier, expressed gratitude for the many contributions Ms. Mensa-Bonsu rendered while she served as one of the ITAC members at the Commission.

Cllr. Verdier enumerated the many achievements made by the Commission, which he said now has a full working secretariat aspiring to achieve the mandate of the TRC.

The Chairman used the occasion to congratulate the Deputy Special Representative to Liberia for her preferment and expressed optimism that her presence in Liberia would meaningfully enhance the work of the TRC.
